Possible Primary Source #1:
I chose the movie Mary & Max as a possible primary source because this is a great example of how food can affect the relationship between people. This is a simple story about a unique friendship of two eccentric ugly people who accidentally find each other through the mail and subsequently learn to love, feel, want, hurt, and dream. They write letters and send each other’s favorite foods in the next 20 years. The first thing I noticed and appreciated is the childish frankness used to explore the very real issues in Mary & Max. As we're left to examine not just the relationships we have in our lives, but the ones we have with ourselves as well. Regardless of the gloomy themes, Mary & Max is a heart-warming tale overall because it tells a tale of two lonely souls becoming best friends, despite being continents and generations apart.
Possible Primary Source #2:

I chose these posters as a possible primary source because they show the brilliant originality of human. These posters are made by several middle school students during art class. The vivid sculpt greatly intrigue my interests in eating the tantalizing fruits. My point to this source is always keeping our mind open to look for something that really attract you and be enthusiastic toward it. We may face some dilemmas during accomplish the goals, but persistence is the best choice.
Of your two sources, I prefer Mary and Max. The posters are cute and creative, but I'm not convinced that they'll give you very much to say about the theme. When it comes to Mary and Max, you obviously won't be able to cover the whole movie in two pages, so I recommend picking a representative scene from it, which involves food in some way. I looked at the trailer and, unfortunately, it doesn't focus on how they exchange food as a means of furthering their friendship. I'm sure you could find a scene that shows it, though.
ReplyDeleteI also prefer Mary and Max. Although both are intersting enough in thier own ways, I feel that Mary and Max is a bigger work that can be more easily looked into and easier to write about. I have never seen Mary and Max but i look forward to seeing your paper!
ReplyDeleteI would also prefer Mary & Max. I think it would be interesting and you would be able to work with that piece for 7-8 weeks and come up with a good solid analysis. I think it would be interesting to find out how food plays a role in their friendship.
ReplyDeleteMy only concern is that Mary and Max might be too long if you are doing the whole movie. Maybe chose a scene from it? I'm not sure though. I've never seen it so i cant quite tell you there.
